Quando si usa il Past Perfect?

Se dobbiamo collegare due eventi passati e dobbiamo far capire quale dei due è accaduto per prima… presto sarà tutto più chiaro.

Costruzione Past Perfect

Costruzione del Past Perfect, forma affermativa:

Sogg. + Had + V3

Costruzione del Past Perfect, forma negativa:

Sogg. + Had not/Hadn’t + V3

Costruzione del Past Perfect, forma interrogativa:

Had + Sogg. + V3

Avete notato? È uguale al present perfect con la differenza che l’ausiliare “have” è al passato.

Frasi con past perfect in inglese:

He had already eaten by the time we arrived.

Quando siamo arrivati aveva già mangiato.

Ci sono due azioni. Noi che arriviamo e lui che mangia.

Grazie al Past Perfect sappiamo che lui aveva già mangiato prima che arrivassimo.

Altra frase:

It had snowed in the night, so the bus didn’t arrive.

Durante la notte ha nevicato, quindi il bus non è arrivato.

Qual è la prima azione? Ovviamente il fatto che abbia nevicato e,per quel motivo, il bus non è arrivato.

Altra frase:

The film had started before we arrived.

Il film è cominciato prima che arrivassimo.

Prima è cominciato il film, poi siamo arrivati. Chiaro?

Nota Bene
Se c’è “before” o “after” il past perfect non è necessario perché sappiamo già quale azione avviene prima.

Frasi con before in inglese:

Past Perfect con il Third Conditional

Ricordi il Third Conditional?

Frasi con past perfect e third conditional in inglese:

If I had known you were ill, I would have visited you.

Se avessi saputo che tu eri malato, sarei venuto a visitarti.

Altra frase:

If I hadn’t gone to bed so late, I wouldn’t have been so tired in the morning.

Se non fossi andato a letto così tardi, non sarei stato così stanco la mattina.

Past Perfect: un’azione che è iniziata nel passato… e continua con un’altra azione passata.

When I graduated, I had been in London for six years.

Quando mi sono laureato, avevo già vissuto a Londra da 6 anni.

6 anni fa ho cominciato a vivere a Londra e… ci vivo ancora.

On 10th of june, I had worked here for 3 years.

Il 10 giugno, saranno 3 anni che ho lavorato qui.

Ho cominciato 3 anni fare un determinato lavoro e a distanza di 3 anni… ci lavoro ancora.
